Speak No Evil
by Liana Gardner
on Tour October 1 – November 30, 2019
Synopsis:In Speak No Evil — What if every time you told the truth, evil followed? My name is Melody Fisher. My daddy was a snake handler in Appalachia until Mama died. Though years have passed, I can still hear the rattle before the strike that took her from me. And it’s all my fault. Since then, I’ve been passed around from foster home to foster home. I didn’t think anything could be as bad as losing Mama. I was wrong. But I will not speak of things people have done to me. Every time I do, worse evil follows. Now, the only thing I trust is what saved me years ago. Back when I would sing the snakes calm …
I moved south when I was in my early teens. It was quite common to be asked by my northern friends about snake handling and other commonalities of places near the Appalachian Mountains. The further you read into this book, the more your heart wraps around Melody. Gardner does an amazing job putting you in her shoes with the vivid imagery and descriptive happenings. Our journey with Melody begins with her not speaking a word (mute) and facing consequences for stabbing a fellow student. As her story unfolds before us, we feel the pain of her past and the losses she’s experienced — primarily the loss of her mother, followed by the disappearance of her father. Evil things happened every time she told the truth so she chose to “speak no evil”. Her experience is brought full-circle with a strong presence of love and support through those who work with her in the foster care system. Definitely gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling about how there are some people who truly care! This would make for an amazing full-length movie feature or TV series. Every page turn draws you in. The lyrics/prose were my favorite parts — absolutely haunting yet intriguing! I received a complimentary copy for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
